“I don’t do suits.
I like it short because I like to walk and it’s hot,”
Leica Carpo answers matter-of-factly when asked about her
unusual office attire. “I do my makeup, but I can’t
do my hair. That’s just me,” she adds. “To
have a five-minute makeup routine, you must be high-maintenance
four times a year and have grooming and hair care on a regular
basis.”
The publisher of Sunday Inquirer magazine seems like
a fuss-free go-getter, but when it comes to fashion, all the
frills and thrills come out. “I don’t know why
I have so many designer friends,” she wonders aloud.
As she gamely poses, you’ll understand why fashion insiders
like good friend Rajo Laurel adore her. She is the personification
of the industry catchword: fierce.
Fierce in the sense that she needs very little direction and
knows exactly
how to project in front of the camera—no second-guessing
or faux timidity. |

These days, Leica is popular as a marathon runner. She was
always active even as a child, what with a mother who adored
Jane Fonda and her late father who pushed her and her sisters
to be swimmers. Unfortunately, swimming turned out to be her
least favorite. To this day, she claims to panic during the
swimming portion of a triathlon. “Swimming is all about
body shape, technique and coaching, but with running, you
have your own technique that you’re born with. I have
the body of a runner. I like it because it just seems like
the kind of activity where it’s pure,” she says. |
